Barney Vaughan, the Nicaraguan entrepreneur who, along with his charismatic wife, Ligia Mendieta, own La Gran Francia, fell in love with the corner building that now houses the hotel’s restaurants and bar when he was a child, during his visits to Granada with the Boy Scouts. It had been his childhood ambition to own this grand house and do something worthwhile with it. After rescuing the architectural gem from sure destruction after years of abandonment by its former owners, Mr. Vaughan embarked on the ambitious task of carefully restoring it to its olden glory and provide the public a quality hotel, where they would be sure to receive the best in Nicaraguan hospitality.
As owner of this special hotel, Mr. Vaughan wants to make sure that its administration incorporates social responsibility. This is why La Gran Francia supports ANF (the American Nicaraguan Foundation.) ANF is a non-profit entity that helps thousands of needy Nicaraguans daily, and Mr. Vaughan is a founding member of its board of directors.
Mr. Vaughan says he supports this foundation because, “ANF exclusively helps the needy of our country, which is the second poorest in the Western Hemisphere. This organization is also very transparent and efficient. They fully disclose all their financial statements every year and of every dollar raised, 98 cents go to help those in need in Nicaragua. On top of that, they support self-sustaining projects, which allows them to help even more people down the line.”
